TOPIC(S) Did you know that for more than 170 years, the Delaware and Raritan Canal has meandered across the narrow waist of New Jersey? Did you know that the D&R was one of our nation’s most successful towpath canals, carrying more tonnage in 1866 than the more famous Erie Canal? Did you know that Johnson & Johnson, Roebling, and Fleischmann’s Distillery all had their start along the D&R? And did you know that the canal provides the people of central New Jersey with both a water supply and a premier recreational facility?

BIOGRAPHY
I have been an architectural historian since 1981 and spent the past 10 years intensively studying the oldest buildings in southern New Jersey, particularly first period (ca. 1690-ca. 1730) structures in Cape May county. The result of this research led to my first book, Early Architecture of Cape May County, NJ (2008) which examines the heavy timber frame (also known as post-and-beam) structures built before the Victorian era. I prepare nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, help municipalities create historic districts, and do intensive-level historic research on a variety of historic buildings, most of them located in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Burlington counties.

BIOGRAPHY
A policy analyst with imagination? It’s not as unusual as you might think. Dennis Rizzo has spent the last thirty years writing, reading and analyzing professional journal articles, market data and public policy documents in the field of social services. In between stints with a marketing firm and running his own business he worked with people who have developmental disabilities, from the ground up. He has been published professionally and been a keynote presenter at several federal and regional conferences on employment for people with disabilities. History has always been a passion for Dennis and, in some ways, an outlet for the daily routine of most of the tasks involved in his career. He has been involved, with his son Mike, in reenacting Civil War Living History for many years. It was this immersion in past lifestyles that led him to exploring the town’s history. His wife, Elizabeth, encouraged him to take a writing course at a local college to see whether he was approaching the task properly. He wasn’t. From Y.A. Harris he learned the essential elements of a good story. By writing some pieces for local newspapers he learned about deadlines and casual, comprehensible style. Dennis took this energy to fictional efforts at first but then was challenged by several folks in town to write a new history of Mount Holly. With the encouragement of many folks, and of The History Press, he took this on. There’s no looking back now.
